Part 1 : Introduction to Industrial Applications of Terahertz Science and Technology, by Prof. Matt Reid
The NSERC CREATE TrUST educational program is dedicated to ultrafast and THz optics and related phenomena. The growth of THz technology to bridge the gap between microwave and infrared frequencies has seen an exponential rise in applications appearing in the literature over the last few decades. The seminar will aim to put into perspective those aspects of the technology that enable interesting new applications and also those that pose challenges for industry adoption of the technology. A selection of applications that highlight the potential for the technology will be reviewed, followed by a discussion of some applications already being used in industry settings to set the stage for where the technology is at present, and what future directions seem promising.
Part 2 : Terahertz single pixel imaging: mapping polarization responses, by Seth Lowry
With increasing accessibility to terahertz frequencies, practical terahertz applications have rapidly grown, notably those relying on terahertz imaging, such as non-destructive evaluation of insulating materials, food quality testing, and concealed object inspection. Of particular interest, is the acquisition of terahertz images for various polarization states, which allows imaging of underlying grain structure and birefringence in wood, and mapping of heat damage and stresses in plastics. Given the high cost and complexity of terahertz detection schemes, fast, computational imaging with a single point detector is desirable. In this talk, advancements in terahertz single pixel imaging will be discussed, followed by the introduction of such an imaging system capable of acquiring images containing polarization information.
