Designing for Humans
Abstract
Science and research are built on structured inquiry: observing, questioning, testing, and refining our understanding of the world. Design thinking shares many of these same principles but starts from a different place. Rather than asking, “What is true?” it asks, “What do people need?” and uses that understanding to drive innovation and problem-solving.
In this interactive session, Designing for Humans, Jordan Martin introduces graduate researchers in ultrafast science and photonics to the principles of design thinking and explores where they align with, and differ from, the scientific method. Through discussion and hands-on activities, participants will learn how to approach technical, research, and collaboration challenges through a human-centred lens. Along the way, they will develop practical skills in empathy, reframing problems, iteration, and experimentation that can strengthen both their research practice and their effectiveness as future leaders.
Bio of speaker
Jordan Martin works at the intersection of innovation, entrepreneurship, and student learning at Dalhousie University. She is currently the Program Manager for the Emera ideaHUB, where she supports early-stage founders as they explore ideas, build ventures, and connect with mentors and community. Jordan previously led the Science Innovation Sandbox (SURGE), helping students use design thinking to tackle real-world problems, and served as Acting Director of Student Experience in the Faculty of Science. With a background in marine science, she brings a practical, curious approach to her work. Jordan is passionate about making innovation feel accessible and creating spaces where people can test ideas, learn by doing, and build confidence along the way.
